RIP Cordon Bleu

Hearing our other hen and her "medium size chicks" in the backyard outside my office (otherwise known as the kitchen) reminded me that the baby chicks in the nest in the front yard still haven't hatched.

So I was curious to know what the incubation period is for chickens, as it's been a while since we first discovered the eggs. Turns out it's around 21 days and sure enough, when I went to check on the nest, I found the hen off it and tiny holes in the 8 remaining eggs, which I think means they're about to hatch.

No clue what happened to egg number 9, but given the foul smell around the nest, I have some idea.

Rest In Peace Cordon Bleu!
