Instructables: Beach Proofing a Full Arm Cast

Take a moment to study the picture on the right.

Now, if I told you that "Island Boy" likes to ride his bike really fast, over objects, around objects, possibly OVER objects, would you be surprised?

Of course not!

And judging by Island Boy's 5 fractures in his 8 years on this planet, you also would not think that he was very good at risk calculation yet, right?

Exactly!

Which brings us to the topic at hand = how to beach proof a full arm cast which under strict doctor's orders shall not touch any water nor sand for at least 6 weeks..... while being on a Caribbean island.

SUPPLIES

The list of items you'll need to beach proof your cast are simple and consist of a few sturdy dish washing gloves, a wash cloth, scissors and duct-tape, which possesses the natural ability to solve ANY problem in the world.

STEP 1:

First, wrap the wash cloth tightly around the arm, right past the end of the cast, then wrap a long piece of duct tape around the cloth.  This first step serves as the place to affix the dish washing glove (since duct tape sticks really well on duct tape but not so well on the cast) and it must be done tight enough to where any water splashes will be kept out of the cast.

CAUTION: Make sure you do NOT put any duct tape directly on the skin, as that would hurt like a mo-fo.

STEP 2:

With the glove rolled half way onto itself, put it on the affected arm and unroll as you put it on.

STEP 3:

If the glove is not long enough to cover the entire cast, simply cut the fingers part off another glove and cut to length. Then put it on the cast in the same fashion as above and use duct tape to cover any joining seams and prevent sand and water from entering the cast.

STEP 4:

Lastly, use duct tape to join the glove with the washcloth part, again making sure NOT to allow any duct tape to touch the skin directly.

STEP 5:

ENJOY YOUR DAY AT THE BEACH!

NOTES:

- Nobody was injured in the making of the first picture or this blog post and the jumping off trees photos are merely meant to get "Island Boy's" personality across.

-While the ordinary "trash bag" method works, it is rather clumsy and easily leads to tears in the thin plastic when being chased by other kids.

- Island Boy: "Mom, I feel like a dork looking like this"
Me: "But you're the only kid on the beach with THE SUPER POWER CLAW OF DOOM"
Island Boy looking at me like I'm insane:  (sigh)

- Making up of super power/hero names for the glove like "the claw" or whatever is highly encouraged and makes your kid feel less like a dork running around the beach with a gigantic glove on his arm.

- The above beach proofing method has been tested against serious water gun usage, burying siblings in the sand and falling in the water while being chased by another sibling.  All results came back as dry and sand free!

That's what ingenuity is all about. Making pragmatic solutions to annoying problems!

Find a reusable and quick replacement for the duct tape - velcro perhaps - and add a spiffy name, and you're on your way to your first billion.

Next do the leg cast version and the full-body version (must include automatic full-face SPF30 application device.

I also see a market for high-street versions, like the "Versace water-tight cast-concealer glove" or the "Hunter bionic dirt defender boot"

Of course - when it takes off, I'll claim it to be my idea!!

    But yeah - I'd say ... you're a genius!
